Drawing ERD Using Visio

This gets a little complicated because Visio needs more info about relationship, etc.

Category – Database

Select Database model Diagram(US)

Step 1- Set Modeling options

From the menu bar à Database, Options, Document

On the General Tab

Select Relational
Select Physical Names

On the Table Tab, select everything except

Order – Physical Order
Data Types – show physical, show portable

On the Relationship Tab

Select Relationships
Select Crow’s feet
Select Show verb phrase, forward text

Step 2 - Set drivers

From the menu bar – Database, Options, Drivers

On the Driver tab, Select the appropriate database

Step3 - Drag the entity control to the drawing area

Fill in what you know
Description- name
Columns – Data type, required, primary key, notes

Step 4 – Create the relationships

                       Drag the Relationship control
                        Connect the X end to the primary table
                        Connect + end to the related table
                        Don’t forget to glue
            Enter Relationship phrase
            Select the relationship line
                        Name – fill in Verb phrase
            It is hard to read so move it using the text block control

Step 5- Set the cardinality

With the relationship line selected
Category – Miscellaneous
Select appropriate cardinality
